Rhodium plating is used mostly on white gold, sterling silver and platinum because of the super shiny finish it gives plus extra benefits like scratch resistance and it will not tarnish or discolor.
For those of you who have rhodium plated wedding rings and such jewelry worn regularly, be aware that rhodium plating does wear off over time. How long before it wears off depends on the thickness of the plating, the type of metal, and how well the plating was applied. This, and how often the jewelry is worn, how it is cared for, all play a part in the wear of the plating. Luckily, rhodium plating that wears off can inexpensively be replated or removed at your local jeweler.
To clean your rhodium plated jewelry Do not use any chemical cleaners. This will cause your rhodium plating to wear off faster. Do use a little water and mild soap, rinse and dry thoroughly or use a polishing cloth.
Sterling silver is the whitest metal. Its standard is 92.5% or .925 because silver alone is too soft it is mixed with 7.5% of other metals usually copper to strengthen it.
Tarnished silver many of us will not wear it on a daily basis so after prolonged storage, when we take it out to wear it again it is usually tarnished. Tarnish is when your silver jewelry becomes darkened due to the silver sulfide which accumulates on top. This usually occurs with long time exposure to elements such as oxygen or sulfur during the period of storage.
This oxidation process does not occur because of the silver, it happens because of the other metals in the silver which react with oxygen, because sulfur is in the oxygen. Any contact with rubber bands can also cause silver to tarnish because of the sulfur in rubber.
For tarnish free silver store in a container with anti-tarnish paper or a ziploc bag which is airtight. To remove heavy tarnish use toothpaste and soft toothbrush, rinse and dry thoroughly. For light tarnish wash your silver in a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid with water, or just polish with a soft cloth.
Titanium is a fast growing trend in men's jewelry. Some of the benefits of titanium are, its extreme resistance to water and corrosion. It is also hypo-allergenic which is great for those of us who are allergic to gold or silver. Titanium is very strong yet very lightweight which makes it very comfortable to wear. Titanium can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap, rinse and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth or tissue. This will return your jewelry to its former brand new look.
As with all jewelry care DO NOT wear your jewelry during heavy work like gardening or during cleaning with harsh chemicals. This will scratch the surface of your jewelry and help any rhodium plating to wear off quickly.
